Grismer dropped into a crouch in the corner next to the front door of the courthouse. He looked at the two halves of the Unity stone. Like the hemispheres of a brain separated by a surgeon’s scalpel.

The mind would never be the same.

For the first ten years of carrying it, he’d had nightmares about losing it. Checked the weight of it in his pocket. Fiddled with it so much, his division leader sent him to CORE HR. Some of the female agents thought it was creepy that he constantly played with his balls.

Good thing that was all they had thought he’d been doing. If they’d known the truth, he would have had a harder time explaining it away.

The power was inside him. A product of genetics like every other human characteristic. But without the stones, a Stonecaller was just a person with a sensitive mind.

Even before he’d been mated to the Unity stone, he’d had dreams. Visions while he slept that told the future.

Premonitions and feelings. Mostly about people. Which airplane to avoid. If he really needed an umbrella or not.

The trials started easy enough. Parlor tricks. Guess the symbol on the card. Describe what was in the room across campus.

What are the Astrals doing?

The question that moved from the mundane to the incredible. The unbelievable.

CORE had recreated a stone circle from various stones mined in Kentucky. Machined using probability factors in a gravity mill, they set them up in a shielded bunker under San Diego.

Tunnels running up to the ocean were sealed by pressure doors, ready to flood the installation if things got out of control.

The most literal pass/fail situation he’d ever seen.

He entered with the other recruits. Psychic hopefuls swapping rumors about secrets the government was finally admitting.

Only a handful remained after the trials. A new one dropped out every day. Seizures. Brain bleeds. Blindness.

One southern girl with a Korean face burned her hands into lumps of coal. An alligator hunter from Florida covered in bible verse tattoos died in his sleep. They found him with a pen jammed through his eye.

From the blood on his hand, it was clear he’d done it himself.

The testing got a little easier in the years following those initial dark days, and it meant more to be among the first ever to call stones.

His talents were universal. Matched to the Unity stone, he could do it all. Could passively hide from the Unified Collective. Actively hide from searching Astrals — reptars passed right by.

While holding his stone, he could send his thoughts out in astral investigation. Through space and time.

He could heal wounds by following probability strings woven into temporal idioms.

He could even send his thoughts out to other Stonecallers, a mental shout that probably meant he was dead.

Agent Shells Arden was killed by a Mullah infiltrator in Brazil. Grismer was in Louisiana when he heard her. The total of all her sensory information delivered at once. Like the voice of God.

His private testimony resulted in the Mullah’s capture. He got a sealed commendation.
